GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL ADMISSION
Personal Statement Essay
This is a hard essay to write. It’s probably much more personal than any of the papers you wrote in college, because it’s about you, not World War II or cell mitosis. Though requirements for graduate and professional schools differ, the Personal Statement serves a similar purpose: communicating a clear sense of self.
This is achieved by addressing how you arrived at your professional goals, why a school’s program is ideal for you, and what you genuinely bring to their program. Personal Statements reveal your motivations, personality, and accomplishments. Striking the right balance between ambition and humility is the key.
The process includes answering personal reflection questions, defining specific goals, developing ideas, editing for organization and clarity, and most importantly giving voice to your aspirations. In the end, it's all about story telling.
